Dear Darkness, You Light Up My Life

I tweeted this a few weeks ago and got a few favorites and retweets.

As someone whose been through his fair share of chaos, I can honestly say that I am grateful for all the dark puzzle pieces in my life.

I’ve learned that darkness brings out the light. Those of you who are artists, photographers, or filmmakers know that nothing highLIGHTS more than contrast. If we look at the dark parts of a piece of art, we quickly realize that these dark spots allow us to see the Light. Continue reading

My five year old son has tons of friends. Part of the reason why he is so blessed is because he calls anyone he likes, plays with, talks to, or looks at his friend.

“My friend is digging a hole to bury Darth Vader in,” Jett mentions as we leave the park.

“Which friend is that? What is his name?”

“I don’t know his name. He is just my friend.” Looking at me like I don’t know what friend means.

The look might be justified. Maybe as we grow older we forget what a friend is. I can’t tell you how many people have questioned me about my friendships. I am/used to be friends with some pretty famous people. Other “friends” would always say things like, “you’re not really friends with so-and-so. Just because you met someone does not mean that they are your friend.” I would counter, “Well, I’m invited to their wedding next month. What does that make me paparazzi?” Continue reading

A Letter to My BBFs (Blogging Best Friends)

Kozo Hattori BowDear Blogging Best Friends,

I don’t know much about you. For all I know you might have voted the exact opposite I did in November, or you might have been rooting for the American athletes to fail in the London Olympics.

You also don’t know me. For example, many of my blogging best friends are women who don’t know that being a Japanese American male, I am Patriarchy’s uber child. I have not always treated women the way they deserve to be treated. If you talked to my ex-girlfriends and even my wife, they would tell you that, at best, I am a work in progress. Although my life’s work centers around peace, I have not always been a peaceful person in thoughts, words, or actions.

The one thing I do know from being your blogging best friend is who we want to be, who we strive to be. I know what is in our souls trying to get out, even if our consciousness is not in accord with that spirit. Continue reading

A Means to Survive: A Justification for Blogging

I love my wife to death. She is part of an inner circle club that has only ever had two members: me and her. She loves and accepts me with all my flaws, inadequacies, and mistakes. She is quite literally a part of me.0062

Maybe it is because of the tragic events that occurred earlier this month. Maybe it is because I study Buddhism (Bad Buddhist joke: Why did the Buddhist doctor get fired? Because he put down “birth” every time he had to answer “Cause of Death.”). Maybe it is because I am trying to be more empathetic with those who are grieving, but I have been thinking about what it would be like to lose the most significant bond I have made.

What would I do? Who would I turn to? How would I survive? Continue reading
